The Sweater Dress

Image
Hello dear Readers! If there is one thing I try to do when it comes to fashion or my sense of style is to get out of my comfort zone. I try to purchase and wear things I never thought would suit me or look good on me. Recently, I saw the instagram story of a plus size influencer I followed. In it, she was rocking a beautiful sweater dress. I wrote to her asking where she got the confidence to just wear the dress. She was gracious enough to reply to me and we exchanged a few messages. She told me that she would just wear the sweater dress without caring because most of the time we are worried about what people may think, but in reality people are too busy with their own lives to care about us. She also added that she had insecrutieis but she decided not to let those insecurities rule her.  I listened to her and that day decided that if I really wanted to get myself a sweater dress, I should just go for it. Life being too short and all. So I went on the hunt for the sweater dress I wante

30 days of Sinniature

Hello Hello! Eid Mubarak.  Ramadan is finally over and now can get back to eating lunch and such.  Ramadan has a particular ambiance in my country. When it comes to Fashion, it is a wonderful time for women and fashion designers. For some reasons, Senegalese women tend to wear only traditional wear the entire month of Ramadan. Maybe it is because Traditional senegalese wear is considered to be modest. It is quite hard for me to dress in traditional wear all through the month. I like my jeans and tees. But this holy month, I had decided to wear all the traditional clothes I had designed in order to promote my brand. Therefore I decided to do "30 days of Sinniature". I wore all the "sample" clothes I had left in my closet (and let us face it, I have a lot) in the hopes that someone would notice me and place an order. I allso tried and photographed myself to post on social media. I was hoping that this project would push me more out of my comfort zone.  So here are th

The Muslim Met Gala

Hello Hello! Ramadan is finally over. My family and most people I know celebrated Eid last Thursday. As usual, after the prayer, we had our christians cousins over, ate good food, took pics with our Eid outfits and enjoy the day.  Muslims have two major holidays, Eid El Fitr to mark the end of Ramadan, and Eid El Kabir two months later to celebrate the sacrifice of Ismael (Isaac in the Bible). It is a moment spent with family and friends, mainly eating and sharing some good times. But there is also something else we like to do, particularly in African countries. And that is dressing up. Eid is the perfect occasion to wear that brand new outfit. It is recommended to dress in a new and nice attire and attend the prayer on Eid.  In my country, the clothes are either traditonal or a mix with modern styles. In recent years, I had the occasion to discover more and more special outfits due to social media. People post on Instgram and Twitter using the hashtags: #SunuSelfieKorite #BlackOutEid

Ramadan Baskets and Ramadan Sugar

Image
Hello Hello We have entered our fourth week of Ramadan. It is getting harder and harder to wake up happy in the morning and eat. But we thank GOD. Dress with matching scarf - Sinniature Shoes - Thrifted Ring - Numero Uno Today I want to discuss a new tradition in my country during Ramadan: Ramadan baskets. What are Ramadan baskets? They are gift baskets which people (mostly women) offer to their relatives or in laws during Ramadan. The craze started a few years back. I am not even sure who is responsible for it. All I know is that in the last decade it has taken momentum. Now we cannot have a Ramadan without Ramadan baskets.  Traditionally in my country, people were sharing their food during Ramadan with the poor. On top of that, it was also a tradition to give sugar to family members. It is called "Sukeurou Koor", Ramadan Sugar in wolof. I think people gave sugar because Senegalese people would eat breakfast twice a day during Ramadan for Suhoor and Iftar, which means that
