Dak'Art 2022 (Biennale de Dakar)

After 4 long years, the Dakar Biennale is back. From May 19 to June 21 2022, many artists from here and there will have the opportunity to showcase their arts in the capital city but also in other regions. The last Biennale was back in 2018; the 2020 edition was cancelled due to Corona.
Established back in 1989 by the government of Senegal, the Dakar Biennale is an event that happens every two years in the city of Dakar and all over the country. While it was primarily a literary event at its creation, it is now devoted to promote African contemporary art. Nowadays, several international artists are chosen to officially display their art around towns in museums, art galleries and cultural centers in what we call "IN". Other artists can also showcase in side-events called "OFF" all over the city. For every edition of the Biennale, a theme is chosen. This year's theme is "I NDAFFA" which means in Serer - a local language- Forger -Out of fire.
La Biennale de Dakar est de retour après 4 longues années. Plusieurs artistes du Sénégal et d'ailleurs auront l'opportunité de montrer leur art dans la capitale mais aussi dans les régions du 19 mai au 21 juin 2022. La dernière Biennale date de 2018, et celle de 2020 a été annulée due au Corona. La Biennale a été créée en 1989 par le gouvernement du Sénégal. Sa première édition de 1990 était puremement dédiée à la littérature. A présent, la Biennale promeut l'art contemporain africain. Plusieurs artistes ont été selectionnés pour exposer dans des évenements officiels appelés "IN". D'autres artistes peuvent exposer lors des "OFF" ouvert au grand public. Le thème de la 14é édition de cette biennale est "I NDAFFA" qui veut dire en Sérère: forger.
I am into art or anything creative. I like going to the Museum and art galleries. But due to work, I often miss out on opportunities around the city. That is why the Biennale is the perfect occasion for me to dive into this creative world. The first weekend of the Biennale, I took the boys to the Place du Souvenir. There were several "OFF" expositions happening. There were sculptures and paintings display. There were also some performances, not sure about what but judging from the costumes made of recycled goods, I think it was about the environment.
J'aime tout ce qui est créatif. J'adore aller dans les musées et les galleries d'art. Malheureusement avec mon travail chargé, je rate parfois des occasions d'assister à des vernissages. C'est pour cela que j'ai l'intention de bien profiter de cette biennale. Le premier weekend, je me suis rendue avec mes garçons à la Place du Souvenir. Il y a avait beaucoup d'expositions OFF, des peintures et sculptures magnifiques. Nous avons aussi assisté à des danses qui représentaient surement le respect à l'environement.
After leaving the Place du Souvenir, we went all along the Corniche next to the Olympic Club to see the rest of the displayed art but also to attend a fashion show. Several renown Senegalese designers were showing their latest collection. I watched with the boys, mesmerized by the talent and the level. My boys asked me when my brand will finally have a fashion show. I replied soon but I have to admit that I have absolutely no idea.
Ensuite nous avons longé la corniche du côté de l'Olympic club pour voir d'autres oeuvres d'art dans un "OFF" appelé "Doxantu" (promenade). Nous avons finalement attéri dans un autre "OFF", un fashion show organisé par quelques stylistes sénégalais. J'ai été éblouié par leur créativité et leur talent. Je me suis rendue compte qu'en tant que styliste, j'étais encore loin derrière. Ce qui m'a fait un peu flanché quand les garcons m'ont demandé quand est ce que j'allais organisé un défilé de mode. J'ai répondu "bientôt" mais je dois reconnaitre que je n'en sais absolument rien.
The following weekend, several musical events were postponed due to a local tragedy (the neonatal ward of a hospital in the country, burned down and 11 babies were killed). There were still some events happening but I did not attend.
Le weekend suivant, plusieurs évènements musicaux ont été reporté à cause du deuil national decrété à la suite de l'incendie à l'hopital de Tivavouane où 11 nouveaux-nés ont perdu la vie. Il y avait toujours d’autres évènements (silencieux) mais j’ai préféré ne pas y aller.
Yesterday, I
was lucky enough to accompany a friend of mine to the embassy of Netherlands.
The ambassador organized an “off” displaying some paintings from her friend and artist Mona Hajjar. It
was a nice little event with food and drinks. I really enjoyed the oil paintings depicting life of women in Mauritania. However, seeing how expensive they were,
I am not ready to own one anytime soon. Nevertheless I had a great time and met
interesting people.
Hier, j’ai eu la chance d’accompagner un de mes amis à
l’ambassade des Pays-Bas. Madame l’ambassadeur avait organisé un « off »
exposant des peintures de son amie Mona Hajjar sur la Mauritanie. Il y avait aussi un petit cocktail avec
de la nourriture et des boissons. J’ai beaucoup aimé la peinture à l’huile
représentant la vie des femmes en Mauritanie. Cependant, vu à quel point les tableaux étaient chers, je ne suis pas prête à en posséder un de sitôt. Néanmoins j’ai
passé une bonne soirée et j’y ai fait de belles rencontres.
