The Wake - Biennale de Dakar

Tis’ the season again! And no, I’m not talking about Christmas or its festive cousins. I’m talking about the Dak’Art Biennale.

The Dak’Art Biennale is the ultimate rendezvous for art and creativity in Dakar, lasting an entire month. If you’ve been following my blog, you might remember I wrote about it two years ago here and here. This year, though, the Biennale came with its share of drama. Originally scheduled for May- June 2024, it was postponed by the new government, citing a lack of necessary funds. Naturally, this sparked backlash, especially from international artists who were ready to showcase their work. Some went ahead and participated in smaller OFF events around the city despite the delay.

Fast forward to November, and the Biennale finally kicked off on the 7th, with the theme "The Wake." It will run for a full month, featuring the usual main exhibitions (IN) and the more informal adjacent events (OFF).

I had the chance to visit the main exhibition at the former tribunal of Dakar, which has been beautifully transformed into a space dedicated to the Biennale and other creative happenings. I went with my eldest, and we spent hours exploring. There was everything—paintings, sculptures, videos, installations, and more. It was an immersive dive into pure art.

Camisole - Numero Uno
Kimono - Dubai Mall
Jeans - old
Sandals - Soumbedioune market
Handbag - gift

I was shocked, mesmerized, inspired, and entertained all at once. Honestly, words can’t quite capture how incredible it all was, so I’ll let the images speak for themselves. Stay tuned for more glimpses of this spectacular event!

I might get me some of these Faty Ly  Ceramics for my potential new home someday.

This space is not big enough to show you all that I saw. I did not even get to see it all. The Boy and I were so tired and hungry after 2 hours of visit, we decided to leave. Therefore, if you are in Dakar, I encourage you to go to the former courthouse and check it out yourself. There are so many other events happening all over town and in some regions during the Biennale. It ends soon on December 7th, so hurry up and go check them out.
