Canadian Tuxedo

Hello!

Do you know what is a Canadian tuxedo? It is an outfit made entirely of denim, typically a denim jacket or shirt paired with denim jeans.

At the end of summer, I found myself completely obsessed with denim. If you've been following my blog for a while, you already know how essential denim is in my life. Honestly, I always thought that by now, I’d have outgrown it, transitioning to more "mature" and ladylike clothing. In Senegal, women my age often lean towards loose, flowing outfits like boubous. At least, that’s what I believed growing up.

But here I am, still living in denim. Don’t get me wrong—I do have my share of elegant outfits for work or special occasions. But denim? It’s my go-to. Lately, I’ve had this itch to add a few specific pieces to my wardrobe: a denim maxi dress, a denim shirt, and another pair of perfect denim pants. So, I spent hours scouring the shops downtown in search of these items.

I found them—but the prices? Let’s just say they didn’t sit well with me. Spending that much on ready-to-wear pieces didn’t feel worth it, especially when I remembered I already had a few meters of embroidered denim fabric sitting at home. The fabric, decorated with brown floral details, was originally meant for a piece in my brand’s collection. But then inspiration struck: why not use it to create something for myself? Maybe a take on a Canadian tuxedo?

The challenge? I didn’t have quite enough fabric. So, I paired it with another denim material and handed everything over to my tailor. A few days later, I had a two-piece set: pants and a tunic-style top with oversized sleeves.

Here’s the thing—I like the outfit. But I don’t love it. The tunic style I went with for the top feels like a misstep. The big sleeves and loose fit make me look wider than I’d prefer, especially in the stomach area. I should have stuck with a classic button-down shirt. The pants, though? They’re a win. I can already see myself wearing them a lot.

Now, I’m debating what to do with the top. Should I leave it as it is or ask the tailor to tweak it? What do you think? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
