Tapas and drinks ( Hotel Le Djoloff review)

 Are you enjoying summer? Well I am trying. I am in a constant mood of going out. I have been out quite a lot with family and friends. Recently I went out to dine with a friend at a local hotel located in the Fann area: Hotel Le Djoloff. I have heard of this hotel for a while but I have never thought about going there. I have to say that I had quite a surprising visit there.

Est-ce que votre été se passe bien ? Moi j’essaie de profiter de ce temps assez clément ces derniers jours. J’ai toujours envie de sortir. Je suis déjà allée a des soirees entre copines. Récemment je me suis rendue à l’hôtel Le Djoloff qui se trouve à Fann près de Soumbédioune. J’avais déjà entendu parler de cet hotel mais je n’avais jamais pensé à y aller jusqu’à ce que mon ami m’y invite. Je dois reconnaitre que j’y ai eu une agréable soirée.

Hotel Le Djoloff is tucked away in a neighborhood not far from the university. Actually, it was the first neighborhood I resided. My parents were living in a flat not far from the hotel when they first got married, and I lived my first 4/ 5 years of life there. I barely remember it though. The hotel is a quaint building of 3 or 4 stories, with African centric decoration. The facade reminds me of a colonial style house you can find in Saint Louis or Goree island. The architecture is rustic but I like the stairs in wood and the mud color of the walls. I was told that it was part of old Dakar by the taxi driver who took me there.

L’hôtel Le Djoloff se trouve dans le quartier de Fann hock non loin de l’université de Dakar. J’y ai résidé durant les premieres années de ma vie car mes parents y avaient un appartement. Mais je dois dire que je ne me souviens pas trop de cette époque. L’hôtel est un bâtiment pittoresque de 3 ou 4 étages, avec une décoration africaine. La façade me rappelle une maison de style colonial que vous pouvez trouver à Saint Louis ou sur l’île de Gorée. L’architecture est rustique mais j’aime les escaliers en bois et la couleur boue des murs. Le chauffeur de taxi qui m’a emmené là-bas m’a dit que l’hôtel faisait partie du vieux Dakar.

I joined my friend on the terrace for tapas and drinks. The place was deserted, with two to three couples sitting here and there. They were mainly foreigners, either guests at the hotel, or expats living in Dakar. I actually like the fact that it was deserted. However, you have to note that I went there on a Wednesday afternoon. The hotel offer Jazz concerts at the basement during the weekends therefore I suppose it is quite busy during the weekend. From the rooftop, you can have a view of the sea, partly blocked by new buildings. Still it was not hot, and we could feel a light breeze from the sea. Unfortunately there quite a few mosquito as the terrace had many plants. At sundown, the place was barely lit with solo lamps put on the table. I quite like the ambiance.

J’ai rejoint mon ami à la terrasse pour manger des tapas. L’endroit était désert, avec deux à trois tables occupées ici et là. Il s’agissait principalement d’étrangers, soit des clients de l’hôtel, soit des expatriés vivant à Dakar. En réalité, j’ai bien aimé le fait qu’il ait été désert. Cependant, vous devez noter que j’y suis allée un mercredi après-midi. L’hôtel propose aussi des concerts de jazz au sous-sol pendant les week-ends, par conséquent, je suppose qu’il y a beaucoup de monde les samedis et dimanches. Du toit, vous avez une vue sur la mer, en partie bloquée par de nouveaux bâtiments. Il ne faisait pas chaud et nous pouvions sentir une légère brise venant de la mer. Malheureusement, il y avait pas mal de moustiques car la terrasse avait beaucoup de plantes. Après le coucher du soleil, l’endroit était à peine éclairé avec des petites lampes posées sur la table. J’ai beaucoup aimé l’ambiance.

We ordered drinks then some tapas that we shared. The menu is varied and you have the option to take an entire plate or just tapas. Prices varied from 1500 to 6000 for the tapas, and up to 12000 for the plate (mainly Gambas). The terrace offers alcohol and cocktails without alcohol along with local juice and soft drinks. I think that the price is reasonable.

Nous avons commandé des boissons puis des tapas que nous avons partagés. Le menu est varié et vous avez la possibilité de prendre une assiette entière ou simplement des tapas. Les prix variaient de 1500 à 6000 FCFA pour les tapas, et jusqu’à 12000 FCFA pour l’assiette (principalement des Gambas). La terrasse propose de l’alcool et des cocktails sans alcool ainsi que des jus locaux et des boissons gazeuses. Je pense que les prix sont assez raisonnables.

Tapas: plantain, sweet potatoe fries, grilled sole, kofta, sautéed kidney, and shrimp curry 

Obviously I had to take pictures. Yet, I regretted waited until it was dark to do it. I find the hotel to be very beautiful. I would not mind staying there if ever I want a quick getaway. Actually, it would be quite ridiculous to do so since I live just 15 minutes away by car. But life is short, why not enjoy?

Évidemment, j’ai pris des photos. Pourtant, j’ai regretté d’avoir attendu qu’il fasse nuit pour le faire. Je trouve l’hôtel très beau. Cela ne me dérangerait pas d’y rester si jamais je voulais avoir un weekend tranquille sans quitter Dakar.. En réalité, ce serait assez ridicule de le faire puisque j’habite à seulement 15 minutes en voiture. Mais la vie est courte, pourquoi ne pas en profiter ?

I finally got the opportunity to wear this crochet skirt I got last year. As always I wait for a special occasion to wear my clothes. And I was glad I did not wait any longer because the skirt is very easy to wear. I paired it with a colorful kimono I also thrifted last year. 

J'ai enfin eu l'occasion de porter cette jupe en crochet que j'ai acheté l'année dernière. Comme toujours j'attend une occasion spéciale pour porter mes vêtements. Et j'étais contente de ne pas avoir attendu plus longtemps car la jupe est très facile à porter. Je l'ai porté avec un kimono coloré que j'ai aussi chiné l'année dernière.

I added these flat sandals that I bought that same day because I liked the color so much. I already have many summer worthy sandals but I wanted a pop of vibrant color. These are also very comfortable as I did not want to bother with heels.  

J'ai ajouté ces sandales plates que j'ai achetées le même jour car j'aimais tellement la couleur. J'ai déjà beaucoup de sandales pour l'été, mais je voulais une couleur vive. Celles-ci sont également très confortables car je ne voulais pas m'embêter avec des talons.

I had a great evening at Hotel Le Djoloff. I might just add it to the list of pleasant places to have a quick drink with friends or after work with colleagues.

J'ai passée une agréable soirée à l’hôtel Le Djoloff. Je pense que je vais l’ajouter à la liste des endroits agréables pour prendre un verre avec des amis ou après le travail avec des collègues.
