Tabaski (Eid el Adha)

I am not sure that in all my years of blogging I have had the opportunity to explain to you fellow readers what is Eid el Adha otherwise known as Tabaski in my country. So today I am going to tell you all about the rituals that surrounds one of the most important Muslim event and how we celebrate it in our country/ house.

Durant toutes mes années de blogger, je ne pense pas avoir eu l'occasion de vous expliquer à vous chers lecteurs ce qu'est l'Aïd el Adha autrement connu sous le nom de Tabaski dans mon pays. Alors aujourd'hui, je vais tout vous dire sur les rituels qui entourent l'un des événements musulmans les plus importants et comment nous le célébrons dans notre pays/maison.
Eid el Adha is a Muslim event that occurs annually. It comes usually 60 days after Eid el Kebir, which is the end of Ramadan. This event commerates the sacrifice of Abraham Abraham was a devout man who could not have children for a very long time. Until Allah gave him a son that he cherished more than anything else in the world, Ismael. To test him, Allah asked him to sacrifice his beloved son. Abraham did not even flinch. When he was about to sacrifice his unique son, Allah sent down a lamb to be sacrificed instead. Abraham proved that he was obedient to Allah. To commemorate this, every year Muslim around the world have to sacrifice a lamb. If one cannot afford a lamb, he can sacrifice another animal such as a goat or a cock. But every adult Muslim who can afford it has to do it, even women.
L'Aïd el Adha est un événement musulman qui a lieu chaque année. Il vient généralement 60 jours après l'Aïd el Kebir, qui marque la fin du Ramadan. Cet événement commémore le sacrifice d'Abraham Abraham était un homme pieux qui n'a pas pu avoir d'enfants pendant très longtemps. Jusqu'à ce qu'Allah lui donne un fils qu'il chérit plus que tout au monde, Ismaël. Pour le tester, Allah lui a demandé de sacrifier son fils bien-aimé. Abraham n'a même pas hésité. Alors qu'il était sur le point de sacrifier son fils unique, Allah envoya un agneau pour être sacrifié à la place. Abraham a prouvé qu'il était obéissant à Allah. Pour commémorer cet acte, chaque année, les musulmans du monde entier doivent sacrifier un agneau. Si quelqu'un n'a pas les moyens d'acheter un agneau, il peut sacrifier un autre animal comme une chèvre ou un coq. Mais tout musulman adulte qui peut se le permettre doit le faire, même les femmes.
Since this is such a big event, there is lot of preparation for it. For Eid a must have is a sheep to sacrifice. Usually a month before the day, you can find along the streets of my city, many sheep sellers. This year there is a price hike due to corona and the embargo on Mali (which used to provide us with many sheep). Usually an average ram would cost between 150.000 to 170.000 FCFA ($265). My father does not like to have animals in the house because of the noise and the smell he says. So even if he buys his sheep weeks in advance, he prefers to leave it at the seller until the day before Eid. In my house, we share the expenses: my father and my brothers buy the rams ans I take care of the groceries for the feast we are going to prepare. Believe me these can cost up to the price of a sheep or more depending.
Comme il s'agit d'un événement si important, il y a beaucoup de préparation pour cela. Pour l'Aïd, il faut avoir un mouton à sacrifier. Habituellement un mois avant le jour J, vous pouvez trouver le long des rues de ma ville, de nombreux vendeurs de moutons. Cette année, il y a une hausse des prix due au corona et à l'embargo sur le Mali (qui nous fournissait autrefois beaucoup de moutons). Habituellement un bélier simple coûterait entre 150.000 à 170.000 FCFA (environ 260 Euro). Mon père n'aime pas avoir d'animaux dans la maison à cause du bruit et de l'odeur. Alors même s'il achète son mouton des semaines à l'avance, il préfère le laisser chez le vendeur jusqu'à la veille de l'Aïd. Chez moi, nous partageons les charges : mon père et mes frères achètent les béliers et je m'occupe des courses pour le festin que nous allons préparer. Croyez-moi, cela peut coûter jusqu'au prix d'un mouton ou plus selon.
Eid is celebrated in family. People who are living in the city return to the countryside for that. They travel days before to make sure to get home in time. I am from the city so I stay at my parents home. The family on my mother’s side and my parents Christian friends often come over. When I was a child, the entire house would be filled with more than 20 people (cousins, aunts and uncles) . And for that one has to prepare a lot of food.
The day of Eid usually starts with the cleaning of the house and the sheeps.
L'Aïd est célébré en famille. Les gens qui vivent en ville retournent au village pour cela. Ils voyagent des jours avant pour s'assurer de rentrer chez eux à temps. Je suis de la ville de Dakar donc je reste chez mes parents. La famille du côté de ma mère et les amis chrétiens de mes parents viennent souvent chez nous pour la fete. Quand j'étais enfant, toute la maison était remplie de plus de 20 personnes (cousins, tantes et oncles). Et pour cela, il faut préparer beaucoup de nourriture.
Le jour de l'Aïd commence généralement par le nettoyage de la maison et des moutons.
We usually have a maid who helps for the daily chores but but during Eid she goes back to her home in the village. So that leaves that task up to me and my mother. My father and brothers deal with the sheeps. Then the men get ready to go to the Mosque for the Eid prayer. They wear nice traditional clothes.
Nous avons généralement une femme de ménage qui aide aux tâches quotidiennes mais pendant l'Aïd, elle retourne au village. Cela laisse donc cette tâche à ma mère et à moi . Mon père et mes frères s'occupent des moutons. Ensuite, les hommes se préparent à se rendre à la mosquée pour la prière de l'Aïd. Ils portent de beaux vêtements traditionnels.
When they come back from the prayer, they prepare for the sheep to be sacrificed by laying plastic sheets on the floor, laying out the machetes and knives that will be used, but also big plastic bins to store the meat. After cleaning the house, I start the cooking by making a sauce made out of 10 kgs of onions. I also start on the salads and desserts and keep them cool on the fridge. Once my father kills the sheeps, my uncle and my brother and some help start to butcher the sheep.
Au retour de la prière, ils préparent le sacrifice des moutons en posant des bâches en plastique sur le sol, en disposant les machettes et les couteaux qui seront utilisés, mais aussi de grands bacs en plastique pour stocker la viande. Après avoir nettoyé la maison, je commence la cuisine en faisant une sauce à base de 10 kg d'oignons. Je prépare aussi les salades et les desserts et les garde au frais au frigo. Une fois que mon père a tué les moutons, mon oncle et mon frère et quelques aides commencent à découper les moutons.
Then my mother takes some pieces that she will donate to our Christian neighbors or friends. Some is stored in the freezer, and the other meat is marinated to be eaten. We make fire on a artisanal grill and we start grilling the meat after slightly cooking it on the stove first to get it tender.
We always eat the liver first. We gather outside cooking while talking because it is always hot inside. It is often 3 Pm when lunch is served. We always cook the same thing: grilled meat with French fries, some salad and sauce. We eat together in a big plate while chitchatting. The ambiance is fun and jovial.
Nous mangeons toujours le foie en premier. On se retrouve dehors pour cuisiner en discutant car il fait toujours chaud à l'intérieur. Il est souvent 15 heures lorsque le déjeuner est servi. On cuisine toujours la même chose : de la viande grillée avec des frites, un peu de salade et de la sauce. On mange ensemble dans une grande assiette en papotant. L'ambiance est joviale.
After the feast, we clean everything: the cooking pots, plates, knives, plastic sheets even the entire backyard is scrubbed. My cousins get the leftovers to go. We shower and wear pour nice clothes to go parade around the house taking pictures. When I was younger we would go around the neighborhood to ask for alms. I have to admit that in recent years I am so tired after the cooking and the cleaning that I rarely get dressed and take pictures. I usually do it the day after a good night sleep. But it is important to do so to keep good memories of that event. One other important Eid tradition is to visit family and friends in the afternoon to greet them. I used to that but I have to admit that I have became very lazy over the years, preferring to send my wishes via WhatsApp or a phone call.
Après avoir mangé, on nettoie tout : les marmites, les assiettes, les couteaux, les bâches même toute la cour arrière est récurée. Mes cousines emportent les restes. Nous nous douchons et portons de beaux vêtements pour prendre des photos. Quand j'étais plus jeune, nous faisions le tour du quartier pour demander l'aumône. Je dois admettre que ces dernières années, je suis tellement fatiguée après la cuisine et le ménage que je m'habille rarement et prends des photos. Je le fais généralement le lendemain apres une bonne nuit de sommeil. Mais il est important de le faire pour garder de bons souvenirs de cet événement. Une autre tradition importante de l'Aïd consiste à rendre visite à la famille et aux amis dans l'après-midi ou le lendemain pour les saluer. J'avais l'habitude de le faire mais je dois admettre que je suis devenu etrès paresseuse au fil des ans, préférant envoyer mes voeux via WhatsApp ou un appel téléphone.
Tabaski is always such a tiring day. But once everything is over and we look back at it, we realized that it was worth it. The most tiring part is the preparation of it all. Nowadays one has to be having a good salary to be able to afford a good Tabaski. If I do the math of all the expenses in preparation of that day (food and clothing), it might go up to half a million FCFA or more. Thankfully we share the cost among the family.
However, Aid is more than costs, it's the symbiosis between families and friends, between people of different religions, it's the act of sharing because we give to the poor. It is the happiness that comes from wearing new shiny clothes and looking beautiful, which is recommended in our religion. It is the happiness of giving new clothes to family as well.

Tabaski est toujours une journée si épuisante. Mais une fois que tout est fini et qu'on y repense, on se rend compte que ça en valait le coup. La partie la plus fatigante est la préparation. De plus tout est si cher. De nos jours, il faut avoir un bon salaire pour pouvoir s'offrir une bonne Tabaski. Si je fais le calcul de toutes les dépenses en préparation de cette journée (nourriture et vêtements), cela pourrait monter jusqu'à un demi-million de FCFA ou plus. Heureusement, nous partageons le coût avec la famille. Mais l'Aid c'est plus que les couts, c'est la symbiose entre les familles et les amis, entre personnes de differentes religions, c'est le partage car on doit donner aux pauvres. C'est le bonheur de porter de nouveaux vêtements et de se faire beau/belle, ce qui est recommandé dans notre religion. C'est aussi le bonheur d'offrir de nouveaux vêtements à sa famille.
